Health & Safety is a primary focus for most industries but for the Construction industry, it can be a matter of life and death if not taken seriously or adhered to. The industry employs around 2.1 million people and contributes around 10% of our GDP. According to the HSE website, there are 1.7 million working people suffering from a work-related illness in Great Britain, that’s around 80% of the construction industry workforce. And sadly, there were 123 workers killed at work and 2,544 deaths due to past asbestos exposure.
The total costs of workplace self-reported injuries and ill health in 2018/19 was £16.2 billion. Ill health causes the biggest proportion of total costs at around 66% (£10.6 billion), with injury resulting in around 34% of total costs (£5.6 billion). These hard-hitting statistics have an impact on friends & families, employees, employers and the industry physically, mentally & financially.
